Serving on Your Local School Board

Are you considering becoming a school board member? Or perhaps you’d just like to learn what school boards and individual school directors do. This is the place to get started.

Who are School Directors?

Washington state’s public school districts are directed by publicly-elected school boards. These board members — called "school directors" — are citizens just like you! They are parents and grandparents, young people and senior citizens, and community members from all walks of life.

Each member brings his or her varying experiences and background to inform good decision making in a spirit of teamwork.

How Do I Apply to be a School Board Member?

Occasionally, vacancies occur on the school board during the middle of a term. The school board has the authority to appoint a community member to finish out an existing term. After the existing term is finished, the new board member will have to run for re-election.

If you are interested in serving as a replacement board member, please fill out the school board application and turn in to the Superintendent.
